Your Questions About Guitar Scales

Ken asks…

How do you improvise guitar scales?

How do I change from 1 guitar scale to another?

admin answers:

Learn some scales and play by grouping notes like triads, arpeggios, or make your own pattern,
Make a pattern in one key and then make another in with other key and then blend them together

Lisa asks…

Is practicing guitar scales improve your playing quickly?

I’ve been practicing the different scale patterns with a metronome. I’ve also been playing motiffs on these patterns all the way up the neck. Will doing this improve my guitar playing ability more than playing chords?

admin answers:

Of course, playing scales will improve your guitar playing.

But you will never be a good lead guitarist until you are first a good rhythm guitarist.

And you will never be a good guitarist if you concentrate on one over the other.

Personally, I don’t recommend scales…they aren’t musical…they’re mechanical, and they will not do much to help you find your own voice.

Learn the pentatonic scale, and the minor pentatonic scale, then work on learning some solos from your favorite guitarists…note for note. Listen to their phrasing and the length of each note. Listen for bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs..etc.

Learning nothing but scales will make you a boring guitarist…make up your own melodies(solos) in your head, and try to transfer them to guitar. Learn a song and all guitar parts by ear only…no books or internet, or tabs allowed!

Do not ignore rhythm guitar…learn at least 4-5 different ways to play each chord…work on strumming and different patterns of tempo. A good solid rhythm guitarist can control the whole band.

Play with a guitarist who’s better than you…you’ll improve as much in 1 year as you will in 10 years sitting around in your room playing scales.

Best of luck, and keep practicing till those fingers bleed.

Tips on memorizing guitar scales and modes?

How do I find out what kind of chord progression I am I just made up? Tips on memorizing guitar scales and modes? I am a highly visual learner if that narrows down your answer.

admin answers:

The first thing is to realise that the word scale just means climb
and scale means to progress through every letter of the alphabet without missing any of the notes
eg a b c d e f g
The next thing to realise is that ALL scales are the SAME
T T S T T T S (T=Tone, which means sound=two frets to you) S=Semitone, which means HALF a sound=single fret to you)
So A to B is a T
B to C is a S
B to C# is a T

ALL major scales are TTSTTTS
so, you LEARN one scale OFF BY HEART
until you can play it without thinking about it, until you can do it with your eyes closed etc
and just play it over and over and over

then when you MOVE to the next postion on the neck, your fretwork will be the SAME
(some variation for the open strings but your ears will now help you)

The difference between a MAJOR and a minor scale are the 3 and the 6 become flats, b3 and b6.
So
C D E F G A B C
C D Eb F G Ab B C

Modes (sigh…=too many people waste their time learning these things but I will explain why)
A mode is just the EXACT same thing! All you do is START from a different position.
This is C MAJOR (No sharps or flats)
C D E F G A B C and the next scale is the DORIAN MODE
D E F G A B C D can you SEE that it is just the EXACT SAME SCALE but it just starts in the SECOND POSITION?

Seriously I would advise you to learn ONE major scale OFF BY HEART
if you do this the THEORY for ALL the others is EXACTLY THE SAME! (you will know them ALL)

next learn how to change from Major to minor with that SAME scale and then you will know ALL of those as well.

The next thing you will want to know is how to play pentatonic and blues scales and they are both the same thing as well.
This is C Major
C D E F G A B C and this is C Pentatonic
C D E G A C there is NO 4 and NO 7
C Major is related to A minor
This is Aminor
A B C D E F G# A and this is A blues scale
A C D E G A and you will see that they have EXACTLY the same notes as each other.

My best advice to you is LEARN your theory.
Go to this website
www.8notes.com
and DONT go to step or lesson TWO until you can do step one with your eyes closed!

Mandy asks…

Want to learn Guitar scales, but don’t know where to start?

I’ve been playing guitar for about 4 months now so i’m not as big as a newbie like i use to be, I’ve got a electric guitar and my dad reckons i should learn guitar scales and everyone on internet reckons to be a good guitarist you should learn your basic scales, So i thought i might as well give scales a try but i don’t know where to start? Does anyone know any good ways to start? (Don’t post video links please).

admin answers:

The first thing you need to do is learn the shapes of the various scales. On a guitar, if you can learn the patterns you can apply them anywhere. For example;

———————————————– Is the E harmonic minor scale. You can use this pattern on all frets.
———————————————– on the 6th string, and try moving it around and learning all the
————————————-13 14— minor scales.
——————–12—14—15————
—12—14–15——————————

Here is another pattern; this is the E major scale. Again, move it around the fretboard and learn all the scales that way.

——————————13-14——————–
—————–12-14-16——————————–
