Your Questions About Guitar

Chris asks…

What guitar controllers work with guitar hero 5?

I just bought Guitar Hero 5 ( for PS3). But i only bought the game. What guitars would work with it ? If you could find a link I would appreciate it.

admin answers:

I dont have the game. But i did play the demo and i used the guitar from the system to play with it. So for example. If you had Guitar Hero 3 then you needed the Guitar for the ps3 to work with it. The same guitar would work for guitar hero 5 but it has to be from the same console that you bought the game with or else it wont work.

What brand of guitar sells really good, cheap baby acoustic guitars?

I want a baby guitar. I noticed Taylor Guitars sells them for around 400. But I don’t have enough money. What other manufacturer makes good baby guitars?

admin answers:

If you want a real good sounding, smaller scale guitar, then check out Luna Guitars.
We tested about 50 of them and the sound projection, finish and quality was surprising . They are inexpensive and specially made for those who prefer a smaller guitars, want a big sound, and a guitar with a special finish.

Don’t kid yourself, this is not a toy. It is a real guitar.

What type of guitar lessons should I get?

The place where I’m learning to play acoustic guitar offers two styles. Rock/pop/jazz and classical. Which should I take? I’ve never played guitar but I’ve been playing piano for five years now, if that makes a difference. Also, what’s an example of a classical song for the guitar and what’s an example of a rock, pop, or jazz song for the guitar?

admin answers:

Rock pop and jazz you will probably learn more chords and things. It would be good if you want to play actual songs that you know. My father plays classical guitar and I find all the songs that he plays very beautiful, but he often tells me how frustrated he gets playing for people when they say “why don’t you play a song that we know?”. He started teaching me a few months ago, I don’t know what style it would be considered. I only know how to play the song Horizons by genesis, blackbird by the beatles, and some classical song called La Grima. I just learned from copying what he did, thats how I learned to play classical piano as well. I realize that not everyone can learn that way though.
If I were you I would go classical because I bet somebody with a foundation in classical will be able to pick up on rock pop and jazz songs easily, but not the othe way around.

What brand of guitar strings should I buy for electric guitar?

I am trying to decide what strings I should buy for my electric guitar. I want to get Ernie Ball strings, but not sure which one to go with, since their are quite a few names. I need strings that won’t go out of tune easily and will last me a few months hopefully, since this will hopefully be the last strings I put on this guitar until I get my new guitar. What strings do you suggest?

admin answers:

If you’re going for down tunings, then I’d suggest getting DR DDT strings. They’re thicker, and when you drop them down, they pretty much never go out of tune. But if you’re doing lighter, standard tunings, get Elixir. They last way longer than D’Addarios or Ernie Ball strings, because they have some magical coating thing.

Sharon asks…

What guitar is best recommended for beginners?

I’m going to start learning to play the guitar soon, so I’m just wondering on what type of guitar and brand should I get?

I’m looking to spend under 300 for a guitar.

I love how people on this site always say…get a Gibson. Okay, if you got 4 grand, get a Gibson then.

Anyways, whats important when picking a first guitar is to go to your local music shop, perhaps with someone that plays guitar and start grabbing guitaris in your price range. Hold them in your hands, do you like the way the neck feels? Does your hand wrap around comfortably? Do you like the looks? Strum the strings, do you like the sound? Hows the action, are the strings too high from the fretboard? That can be adjusted, but its nice to find one right off the back.

A guitar is a very personal thing that has to fit you. Fenders fit me the best. They are great for my hand size, I love the way the feel, look, and sound, and the action is great on them.

If you’re looking to play electric, standard Squier strats by Fender are nice. The quality of them has really improved and I’m quite pleased with them. Epiphone makes a good starter pack as well, but the epiphone SG specials don’t give you much room to upgrade. You can upgrade a squier start and make it fantastic.

Epiphone makes great acoustics for a good price. Oscar Schmidt also makes some good entry level guitars.

So basically, go ahead try the guitars out that catch your eye and see what one feels right whne you hold it. Its much more personal than picking a brand name.

Also, some people will say start with an electric, its easier! Or start with an acoustic, you’ll be better at it! I say, start with what you want to start with. Do you want to play rock? Get an electric. Do you want to play country or folk? Get an acoustic. Playing the blues? Well, thats harder…do you want to play solo fingerstyle blues? Get an acoustic. Do you want to play texas or chicago style blues? Get an electric.

You can always get one or the other later on. I play the blues mostly, and I switch between acoustic and electric. My first guitar was an electric, but I bought an acoustic about 6 months after.
