James asks…
Are there any acoustic guitar techniques for playing chords?
Playing chords is EXTREMELY hectic. I know how to read it but it is hard. I don't want to take lessons until I really get confused and now is not the time to. Do you have any techniques, tips, or strategies for playing guitar chords ?? THANKS! ;]
admin answers:
Well there’s the classic way of just remembering them all- and it’s always the classic way that works.
Another way is to understand how chords are built of scales like how the C Major Chord is built off the C Major Scale.
You can also try learning barre chords. They’re movable and you can change chords by just shifting them around the neck without changing the fingering of the chord.
For me, i used the hard way of memorizing them. Actually you really should take lessons. They will enlighten you instead of confusing you.
Good luck (:

Mary asks…
What are all the acoustic guitar chords?
I know some but. I need more!!!
admin answers:
Go to this site. It shows a ton of chords you can do with proper figuring.
Just click on the chord and you can hear how it sounds. At least you can check if you are playing it right. The keys are at the top of the menu.

Donald asks…
Do i need to learn some special guitar scales to be able to do solos?
I’ve been playing for a couple of years now and (embarrassingly) can’t play awesome guitar solos to save my life. i heard guitarists solo according to some special scale they learn (i heard about something called the pentatonic scale? idk) So what tips can you guys gimme to be able to play guitar solos like the one in Master of Puppets or Sweet Child O’ Mine or in any song.
admin answers:
Yes, try the minor pentatonic to start with.

Carol asks…
Where do I learn these certain guitar scales?
Like if I wanted to play an old western song, or an Asian themed song, or something. Obviously there’s some sort of scale to be played to get these certain sounds. And guitar effects I don’t care for. Let’s say this is for acoustic guitar.
admin answers:
It’s not necessarily all scales. Like “old West” music is all in the natural minor or Dorian mode; it’s mostly the sounds (in other words, guitar effects) that gives it its distinctive sound.
Japanese music often uses the major pentatonic scale. Indonesian gamelan music uses slendro and pelog, two scales that are kind of microtonal. Tuvan khoomei uses the major pentatonic as well. I’ve barely covered three countries there and already they use various different scales. You can’t expect to just go “all Asian music is pentatonic” and then think you can play it all.
Choose a specific genre, then check out Wikipedia for details on the scales used.

Sandy asks…
Do you encourage or go against guitar scales? everyone tells me something different?
All the smart people use scales but when I use them they are very boring and annoying. I suck at learning which notes are in the scale and organizing them into little boxes and switching through them to improvise . And also Slash i dont think used scales. Hes my idol and all he did was sit there jamming to aerosmith records. Some people say its immpossible to learn guitar without scales and others say you dont really need them you just have to find which notes sound good. What do you say?
admin answers:
Definitely learn scales, but you don’t have to learn every single one of them. I think the best thing to do is learn the CAGED system. It’s only 5 chords, and the 5 pentatonic scales (one for each of the 5 chord forms). It’s a little hard to explain in words, you’d be better off doing a Google search to get some diagrams, but here’s a quick summary.
You start with a C chord on the 0-3 frets. The next C chord is in the shape of A on frets 3-5. The next C chord is in the shape of G (and keep going, it spells out the word CAGED). You can start with G, and the next G is in the shape of E, next shape is D. Get the picture? And each shape has a pentatonic scale that ‘lays’ over it.
If you don’t mind spending a few bucks, you can buy a CD-ROM called “CAGED Cracked” at truefire.com It explains the whole system very well (it also covers the EDCAG system, which is the same concept but for minor chords). There are a few sample videos to watch at the website if you want to check it out first.
Or if you don’t want to buy the CD, I can scan the diagrams that came with it and email them.

Mary asks…
Beautiful sounding guitar scales help plz?
Hello ive been playing guitar for about a year and a half and I have come pretty advanced in my playing and i know how to use scales but i want to learn a scale that i can use for a clean rhythm sound that has alot of feeling to it. For example like the solo from part from 10 years gone by zeppelin. Thank you for any input.
admin answers:
I’m a fan of the Lydian scale.
There’s a few different “Gypsy” scales, those sound cool.
I like the “Hirajoshi” japanese scale, it’s used with kotos. Very exotic sounding.
The “Enigmatic” scale is kinda cool, too.
Saul

George asks…
What Guitar scales do i need to know?
What are guitar scales that any guitar player should know i know the pentatonic and six modes (lidian, aeonian etc.) what other scales do i need to know
admin answers:
Learn the major scale, learn chord construction, and some basic pentatonic improvisation. Then just let the scales come to you as you’re learning music. One day you’ll go to learn a new song and you’ll encounter a new scale. If you really like its sound, investigate further.
The best way to learn about new scales is to first hear them in use in an actual piece of music, not just some diagram in a book.

Linda asks…
Does anybody have any advice on how to quickly perform power chords on electric guitar?
Like switch from an E to Dm with very little to no pause between? Like how can I train my fingers to do so quickly?
admin answers:
Well let me go ahead and be a music geek for a second. First of all, when you’re talking about power chords, there is no such thing as major and minor. The music geek would say E5 and D5, because this type of chord has no distinguishing note to make it major or minor.
Now to answer your question. You’ll want to get both chords using the 5th string position, since they are close to each other. It’s the same shape for both, so just relax your fingers as you move and then press down when you’re in the next chord. Keep your fingers stiff though so you don’t loose the shape. Here’s the TAB for you:
E5:

John asks…
Can you play electric guitar songs on an acoustic guitar?
This is probably a dumb question, but I want to buy a Beatles book for guitar and its for electric guitar but I only have an acoustic, so is it possible to play electric guitar chords on an acoustic guitar?
Thanks so much!
admin answers:
Of course you can play them! Especially The Beatles! Their songs fit wonderful on any type of guitar. And it’s not a dumb question, it’s normal for someone to ask. When I first started to play, I was wondering that too!

Thomas asks…
Can’t seem to play chords on my electric guitar, need help.?
I can play chords on my acoustic, but if I play it on my electric the chord doesn’t ring out. The strings don’t seem to sound harmonious if that makes any sense. Just a jumbled set of noise coming out of my amp. I have a fender frontman so I know it isn’t top quality, but is this my amp or is it something else like too much distortion?
admin answers:
It could be too much distortion. Also, check the middle, treble and bass settings on your amp, as well as tone and volume on your guitar. Maybe you have one of these turned way up or way down, messing up the sound.

Sandy asks…
How do you figure out how to play electric guitar licks from chords?
If I was planning on playing a lick when the song is in G and progresses: G,C,D… How would I form a lick? Would I use the G Pentatonic position scale?
admin answers:
There are many levels of theory involved in playing over a set of chords. The more you play guitar, the more you will learn about the options available to you, and of course the more you will develop your ear and start to ‘hear’ what works well.
But where is the best place to start?
The minor pentatonic scale is the first place for most guitarists and it is a great scale for many reasons, one of the best things about it is sounds good over a lot of chords. So in the key of G, playing a minor pentatonic scale will sound good a lot of the time (even when playing G minor pentatonic over C and D).
As you learn more scales (the G major scale would sound good over this too), you’ll learn to mix your playing so you might play a G minor pentatonic lick followed by a G major lick – that will vary the tonality that you are bringing out of the underlying chords.
But to get started
1) Learn your G minor pentatonic scale in first position (i.e. Starting at the third fret of the thick (E) string)
2) Learn the other positions of the same scale – so you can play it anywhere over the fretboard
3) Play over the chords – record yourself, jam with a mate or play along with a CD that has those chords – a song you know goes G, C, D
And buy guitar magazines, books and maybe even DVDs. There’s also great websites out there that you can learn from for free (e.g. Http://www.guitarpracticeblog.com/ )

Joseph asks…
Are the chords of acoustic guitar and electric guitar The same?
I’ve been struggling with this question. I wanted to know how to play both of them but my mom wants me to focus in electric guitar.
My question is, will I be able to play acoustic guitar if I learn just the chords, key, or notes of electric guitar?
On*… I mean like if I learn to just play electric guitar, will I be able to play acoustic guitar by myself? Are they the same just the sounds produced are different.
admin answers:
Yes they are the same. It may take a little bit of practice to get used to the way the acoustic feels in your arms, but other then that, you should be good

Steven asks…
What are some good, high quality acoustic guitar strings?
And what makes them high quality?
I’m buying gifts for a novice acoustic guitar player and thinking of getting him strings, picks, a metronome, etc. i’m still thinking of gift ideas like that
also, what are some other good gift ideas for an acoustic guitar player?
admin answers:
GHS strings are good and I have a Samick Les Paul. Try Martins or GHS or whatever your local music store has. Ask them about strings.

Mark asks…
What acoustic guitar strings to use?
I have a Yamaha acoustic guitar. I am a beginner and finding the strings i have very hard to use. I want to get different strings that are easier on my fingers and less difficult to press down. I don’t have a specific genre of playing since i am just learning.
I know that nylon strings would be easier but I am not sure if they are compatible with my guitar.
Can someone help me out?
admin answers:
For a beginning guitarist I would recommend anything from D’Addario. Get the lightest action that they have for your acoustic guitar. I would also look in to whether your action is too high. Your action is the distance between the the stings and the neck of the guitar. The lower the action the harder it is to press the strings down and get a good clean tone. I think your action is the culprit here my friend but, if not D’Addario is the way to go.

James asks…
How do I make my acoustic guitar strings sound brand new?
I have a acoustic guitar and the strings turned black…..before they looked new and sounded good……a few days later it started to sound not good and they turned black…..How to i make my guitar string sound new???? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!
admin answers:
Your guitar strings shouldn’t turn black. I’d highly recommend switching to a different brand of guitar strings. I like the Ernie Ball coated acoustic strings – they feel awesome and last almost forever
The easiest way is with WD-40. Take a rag and fold it in half, spray one side. Place the rag under the strings and fold it over (the rag should be folded into fourths with the strings in the middle). Move the rag up and down the lengths of the strings. When the rag turns black, open it up and fold it back over and repeat. Do this until the rag is clean. Your strings might turn black again, if they do, just repeat this.
Ernie ball makes some string wipes that might help you out as well.
-The “black” is probably from oil they used while extruding the steel. This oil soaked into pours of low quality steel, and then start to seep out during the stress of playing.
I’ve heard of some guitar players boiling their strings to keep them fresh. The only down side to this is that you are likely to break a string the second time you put it on.

John asks…
How to tune my electric guitar with my tuner.?
Iv recently got my guitar tuner and i dont know how to work it.
Its a Roberts R-50 and can tune chromatic guitar/bass/violin.
It has 5 buttons power/mode/note/pitch and flat and im trying to tune my guitar a half step down.
any help on how it works would be appreciated.
admin answers:
Plug the guitar in, turn it on, and play a note. If it’s a tuner that’s worth anything it should tell you what note you plucked.

William asks…
how much dose an electric guitar tuner cost?
i just need to know the price that i can get an electric guitar tuner that’s durable and accurate. and for vary cheap vary simple question
i almost forgot im thinking of getting it from yenny’s music store in centralia not walmart they sell crap for crap cheap and the budget is low like 10$ – 30$ we have no credit cards either so getting it online is not an option
admin answers:
Buy guitar gear from a guitar shop not a supermarket.
Guitar tuners, the more you pay, usually the better the tuner, more features, more accurate and faster.
A good chromatic tuner (one that can tune to all 7 notes (a,b,c,d,e,f,g)) is best and will cost around £10.
Check out http://www.guitarbitz.com/guitar_tuners.htm as they have a good range of quality tuners that wont break the bank.

Lisa asks…
Electric Guitar Tuner?
Well i wanna know what you guys think, i got a ibanez beginner guitar set and it came with this electric guitar tuner and it tunes using lights and its really confusing. What type of electric tuner do you guys recommend.
Thanks for answering.
admin answers:
I don’t use a tuner but have one that works when there is lots of noise going on. Called Planet Waves (strobe on string tuning) You point the tuner on the twelfth fret and it stops flashing when your in harmony. None of these tuners are absolutely perfect. I like using harmonic tuning just using my fingers and ears. Hard to tell you how to do this in writing.
Good luck

Thomas asks…
My electric guitar tuner isn’t working properly?
When i try and tune my acoustic guitar, the tuner says i have the right note, but i can clearly hear that the guitar is miles out of tune. why is this happening? the room is deathly quiet, and the tuner is of good quality. there is an option to change the hertz on the tuner does that have anything to do with it?
admin answers:
First, make sure its at 440 hertz, this is concert pitch. Second, make sure your tuning the right strings for the right note. They are, from thinest to thickest, E, B, G, D, A, E. Also, it might be the tuner. The best tuners are chromatic tuners, because the show you how far off from a note you are, and can be used for different tunings.

Donald asks…
