Jenny asks…

Is there such a thing as an online guitar tuner that uses my computer’s mic to tell me what to do?

I know it’s probably not the most accurate way, but it’s better than what I have now which is 2 guitars COMPLETELY out of tune.

I’ve tried doing it by ear using sites that show you what each string should sound like, but I can never seen to get it to match.

Is there a way I can turn my mic on and have software tell me whether I need to tune each string up or down for standard tuning?
I actually already tried what you sent me Shrede, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to use it.

admin answers:

You click on the string you want to tune, and then you hold the mic up to the string and hit it. There’s a speedometer kinda thing on the left, and when the needle is in the center of the two brown lines, you’re good.

You gotta make sure the device is set to Fourier, and to do so, hit Ctrl + F. To get to a MIDI tune by ear thingy, hit Ctrl + M.

Lisa asks…

Thoughts on Washburn guitars?

My friend’s parents own a pawn shop, and they have two guitars for sale. One is a Washburn WI 64, the other a Squier Strat. I’m leaning towards the Squier since it’s my first electric guitar (been playing acoustic for almost a year), and I can’t find much online about the WI. Can somebody tell me about their experiences with this band? Gracias answerers.
Btw, does anyone else feel that Yahoo! Answers doesn’t really have a satisfying place to post questions on instruments? I was looking at other questions regarding instruments and they seem all around the place. Petition!

admin answers:

Washburn is most definitely a higher quality guitar than Squire! First off, the washburn is made of a mid range priced wood, while the Squire is most likely made out of a low end basswood. Reviews online say mostly good things about the Washburn.

Personally, i have never played the particular model in question. Even if i did, each guitar of the same model is different due to various factors (different batches of wood, particularly). Due to this, it really comes down to what suits you best and what feels comfortable for you. You really want to pick up a guitar and say “this is the one”, rather than settle for something you are unsure about. In my opinion, the Washburn is the way to go because its higher quality and you will get more mileage out of it.

Yes, i also did notice that there currently is no “Instruments” section in Yahoo! Answers. I usually only answer those questions, so finding them is difficult. I’m all in for an Instrument dedicated category. It would certainly help those who need answers get them much faster. Besides, there’s a category for just about every thing else, so why not Instruments too?

Electric Guitar: Jackson guitars and Floyd Rose Double Locking Tremolo?

Hi I was wondering what the cheapest Jackson that I could get with a Floyd Rose Double Locking Tremolo already installed would cost. Because I really want a guitar that I could use the whammy bar with, but without un-tuning it. Or would you rather suggest I buy and install one on my guitar (if possible), a Jackson JS1? What would the price be to buy a good quality one, and for someone professional to install it? My guitar cost $179 on sale when I bought it if you were wondering. So would it be cheaper for me to buy a Jackson with the Floyd Rose Double Locking Tremolo already installed, or would it be cheaper if I got the Floyd Rose Tremolo itself, and then have someone professional to install it? Thank you very much!
Does Guitar Center help install Floyd Rose Tremolos?

admin answers:

For Jackson, id say have one installed. Jackson have a high end and a low end in quality. There isnt really a medium. Good jacksons are $700+ so you should add the Floyd for a couple hundred I think after buying it and installation

Lisa asks…

what are some fun to play harmonious songs to play on acoustic guitar?

I want to learn to play more beutiful sounding songs on my acoustic guitar…Such as goodbye blue sky by pink floyd or fur elise by beethoven. Does anyone have any suggestions on some nice sounding acoustic guitar songs?

admin answers:

The Beatles wrote a wealth of songs that sound lovely on the acoustic guitar.

Here Comes the Sun
Blackbird
Dear Prudence
Yesterday
Norwegian Wood
etc

If you aren’t into the Beatles, there are loads of beautiful songs you can play! Eric Clapton wrote some nice ones (Tears in Heaven, Change the World, etc) and James Taylor has some nice tunes as well.

You mentioned Fur Elise. If you are into classical music, there’s a wealth of that too. It really just depends on what you’d like to play!

Mary asks…

Does anyone know any good acoustic guitar songs?

I am working on a trailer and I need a song with an acoustic guitar in it and has a sort of western(gunslinger) feel to it. Please list as many songs as you think of.

admin answers:

A few good songs would be:
Ghost Rider……………………………………………The Outlaws
House Of The Rising Sun…………………………..The Animals and all songs by Johnny Cash
The reason why I suggest Ghost Rider is because the song is actually about a cowboy.

Helen asks…

What is a good pitch to set my guitar tuner to?

I have an electro-acoustic guitar and a digital tuner. I’ve always wondered what’s up with the “pitch” on my tuner. It can be changed from anywhere from 435-446. What is the best “in between” pitch that isn’t too high or low. Thanks (:

admin answers:

Typically, the number is 440. I imagine it can be moved up or down slightly depending on what the rest of the instruments you’re playing with sound like.

Michael asks…

Is it possible to tune an alto sax using a guitar tuner?

I know the notes are different and everything. I have a guitar tuner, but not one for my sax. I’m practicing right now, and I’m terribly out of tune. I’ve tried fixing it myself but my ears aren’t working too well for me today. Is it possible to, maybe, convert notes are something? Like see if you can use one note to tune or whatever? If it is possible, how do you do it? Please and thank you!

admin answers:

To tune an alto sax is since the alto sax is and Eb instrument, and the guitar is C, so that means a C on the alto sax sounds like Eb.

That means, In order for a C to sound like a concert C, the concert C needs to be added a minor third up. So if you want a c on the alto sax, the tuner needs to be set to Eb.

Here is the guitar string and the note minor 3rd up.

E G
A C
D F
G Bb
B D
E G

so play on the alto sax the note on the left, the tuner note on the right.

Ken asks…

How do I use a Colt E205 guitar tuner?

I have a steel-string acoustic guitar. When I hit a right note I know the green light is supposed to light up, but once I turn it on the light just flashes every few seconds. The microphone doesn’t even seem to pick up the sound even if I hold it a centimeter away from the string.

Is the tuner broken or am I just an idiot?

admin answers:

Tuner is broken

Chris asks…

need help picking out guitar tuner for boyfriend?

I want to get my boyfriend a guitar tuner for his birthday, but I don’t know where to start. He has an acoustic guitar and has been mentioning that he should get one for a long time. I want to get him a tuner that isn’t too expensive, but will also last and one that he will like. Any help would be appreciated. My budget is $25 to $75.

admin answers:

A decent tuner should go for $20-30. Call a local music shop and ask. Quartz is the best for the money.

Your Questions About Electric Guitar Kits

Linda asks…

What electric guitar and starter kit should i buy for my first guitar?

I am looking to start to learn the electric guitar. I have no knowlege or experience of guitars. I am 13 years old if that makes a difference! I would also like a starter kit and pay as least as possible. Thanks in advance.

admin answers:

If i were you, i wouldnt buy a beginner guitar or amp…b/c it wont sound good and you will be discouraged. You should buy a guitar for at least 200-300 bucks and a 200-300 dollar amp. Trust me, i started playing five weeks ago, and i bought the amp and guitar for 300 together. That was a nightmare. I wouldnt play b/c i didnt like how i sounded, i thought i sucked at playing. BUT, i returned the guitar and amp and got a guitar and amp together for 600 dollars. Of course, theres alot better than that, but for me, im happy with the sound of my playing after switching.

Whats the point of getting a beginner guitar when u wont stay as a beginner…u will get better,

and if you are stuck with a beginner guitar even though you are not a beginner, you will be very unhappy and will probably end up spending even more money for a better guitar later.

Good luck.

Michael asks…

Buying an starter electric guitar kit?

I’m 15 wanting to learn a lil guitar . i wuz lookin for what the best quality one i could buy for 180 or less thanks

admin answers:

The best one is worth $260, but one that fits your budget is also available.
The Fender Stratocaster starter kit starts at 179.99 and comes with headphones an amp (i forget how what kind) a Stratocaster, a couple of picks, whammy bar, and a guitar strap.

Jenny asks…

Whats a good electric guitar kit for a beginner, that comes with a nice amp?

admin answers:

U wuld probably be better off talking to sumone at a music store, but my first answer wuld probably be a Squire kit, its a Fender shootoff, and has pretty good sound

David asks…

I want to buy an Electric Guitar Kit, need help!?

Its going to be my first guitar and i have been searching online the problem is that they all offer different brands with different prices and its really confusing!
Can you suggest any brand? or things to keep in mind while buying one? What to watch out for?
i have $120 bucks i can spent on the guitar right now.

admin answers:

Squier, Epiphone, Dean, Ibanez are all good brands.
Check the guitar for any cracks, make sure the tuning pegs turn smoothly, put the bottom of the guitar on the floor with the guitar turned sideways and look down the neck to make sure it isn’t heavily bowed (you should see a slight bow – that’s normal) then turn it face up and look down the neck to make sure it isn’t twisted.
Then hold the guitar as you normally would and see how it feels in your hands – too big?, too small?, does the neck feel good or is it too fat or too thin?
Then plug it in and play every note on the neck, especially the lower pitched strings listening for any buzzes or dead spots (this could indicate a bad or uneven fret bar.
Most inexpensive guitars are manufactured pretty well these days, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much, but it never hurts to check it out carefully.
If you have a friend that plays, bring them to the store with you.

Chris asks…

Good starter electric guitar (for an adult, not a child)?

I am turning 25 next month, and I’m pretty bored with the post-college life. I really would like how to learn to play the guitar. Thing is, I’m not sure how to go about doing it. Can anyone recommend a fairly cheap (under $200 would be great) electric guitar or preferably, an electric guitar starter kit? Most of the ones I see are for kids. Any other tips for starting out would be great! I played the clarinet for 14 years so I do have a musical background.

admin answers:

I think “Squire” is a good cheap brand for about $150. I just turned 27 and I recently bought a 500 dollar Stratocaster, and I think it was worth the investment. I would certainly recommend it, but you’d have to look at your budget :)
